“Easy” ain’t going anywhere!

Understand when I say that. It is easy to not wake up. It is easy to eat the cookie, not workout or half ass it every single day at work. Easy isn’t going anywhere. Every day, you have to be in grind mode. A grind state of mind, every single day. I went to a consulting meeting. I was 40 days into my fitness program. Everyone was having drinks, ordering food and I ordered water with lemon. They asked what I was doing. I explained my program and that was the end of it. With that comes a certain respect because I am different, I am weird. I have goals. Things I have to do. I am not saying you have to do it. I am saying I am doing it. Easy is always there. Drinks are always there. The clubs are always there. You’ve got to be weird. You have to be different if you are trying to inspire any one. If you are trying to do better for yourself. You better be different than what everyone else is doing. The fact is easy isn’t going anywhere. Most people love easy. You have to be in grind mode if you want anything amazing out of your life. Opportunities don’t always stay around. I am in an amazing support program that may not be around in a month from now. The fact that I have all this support, all this motivation, all this confidence may not be around a month from now. What will be around, are those cookies. The truth of the matter is that you have to take advantage of your opportunities right now. You have to be in the grind mode.

Do you believe in yourself?

Today is a serious talk.
Do you truly believe in yourself?
I was talking with my daughter and son about someone after soccer today. He is a man of little words but he turned to me and said,” Yes Daddy, you can do anything you want, as long as you are willing to work for it. That is what my 10-year-old said yesterday. I paused and said, Yes, you are right. You can do anything you want as long as you are willing to work for it. He said, Yes, you are living proof of it. He said I know that I can have it too, if I want to work hard for it.
So my question to all of you today is, “Do you believe that”? Do you believe that you can have basically anything you want IF you are willing to work for it?
Honestly, I never believed that as a kid. I had “stinkin’ thinkin”. I was a confident kid overall, but there were certain things that I did not believe. I did not believe that I could have whatever I wanted as a black guy. As a ten-year-old at that time, I just did not believe. It was the thought process that I had from whatever I saw; whatever it is. I don’t blame anybody. I didn’t believe that I had the same opportunity as others of a different color or from the family upbringing others had. I don’t know when it changed for me over time, but all I know is that seeing other people and other experiences and seeing people that looked like me, helped me to start to change. It helped me to believe just a little bit. I started to realize how lucky I was to have my Father in my life and how hard he was working and to be able to provide for my family. It just started to change me. I was 17 years old, senior year in High School and I remember thinking how I wanted to be a Physical Therapist. I believed there were no black Physical Therapists. I remember my father telling me he knew of a black PT and I thought, really? At 17 years old I didn’t believe this. I needed to see that guy to believe it was possible for me. This is what I want to say. If you truly believe that nothing can change for you in your current situation because of what you look or feel like, because of your gender or your sexual orientation… You are done! As a parent that has a 10-year-old in the house that already knows that he can do whatever he wants as long as he is willing to work for it, I feel like I have accomplished a parenting goal. If all my kids can understand that, my job is done. But my job really isn’t done because I want to try this with other people. You have to understand you can have whatever you want, you just have to put in the work. Where there is a will, there is a way. You must change your way of thinking. You have to be involved in personal development. You have to do it because we have been conditioned to think that things are not available to us. We can’t get out of our situation or living conditions that we are in. The truth is that you can. You can! You have to start changing it in your mind. Do you truly believe in yourself? If you don’t, then you better get on Periscope every morning or you better get on YouTube, videos or books. You must start. A ten-year-old kid believes in more than we do.

Changing your Mindset

Today we are talking about changing your focus, changing your mind set and how it’s going to change your life. Are you a negative person? Are you that type of person that finds everything around you negative?

Or are you the type of person that finds everything around you positive? Let’s do an exercise. I want you to look around the room at everything. Look around at everything that is brown. Now close your eyes and tell me everything that is red in the room. Exactly. Not too many things because you were so focused on the brown. This is an exercise someone taught me about a year ago which came from this book called The Happiness Advantage.

When you buy a new car, don’t you see ten times the amount of these cars on the road? All of a sudden, you think they just popped up? No. It was because your mind was focused on that car. So now you are looking for that car. It is no different if your mind is always focused on the negative. Looking at people trying to screw you over, trying to be one up on you. If that is all your mind is focused on, then that is all you are going to see. You will live a life of skepticism. You will live a life of always believing someone is going to do you wrong. You will never find good in any situation, whether you perceive it as good or bad. You have to live a life where everything is a potential opportunity. Good things, bad things are all potential learning opportunities and perhaps something that could benefit me later. That is what you will see. That is what you will focus on. The truth of this is that we need other people to promote and benefit from us. If you are a business owner like myself, you work with a  team. No one wants to work with a negative Nancy. No one wants a negative person leading them. So I say, change your focus. That will change your life. It’s a simple formula, but not an easy thing to do. You can change it, just like that!

Birds of a Feather

I am now the creator of the Physical Therapy Builder Academy which was released weeks ago. I want to talk about this series a little bit. I have four online courses. In my videos, I am showing people how I became successful in Physical Therapy. Four years in a row I have had a million-dollar company. I am 38 years old and have been a PT since the age of 23. I have owned my clinics since I am 27. I am sharing every one of my tricks and tips. I have no fear giving my secrets away because you still have to execute them. I will be traveling to San Francisco for consulting this weekend. I have a twelve-hour day on Monday and then heading to the Bahamas with my wife.

Today My cousin put something on Facebook that said, “Birds of a feather, flock together, but Eagles you have to find, one at a time”!

I said, isn’t that the truth! I am no bird! You should not be a bird! If you are trying to change the game and be different, you cannot flock with everyone else. Leaders have focus, vision, determination. They have will and they have drive. The simple fact is most people aren’t driven, so you can’t always flock with everybody else.

Do you understand what I am saying? Sometimes you just have to ride it out the way you want to ride it out. I have been fighting with myself about doing those courses for years. I have been working two days a week and my company has been constantly growing over the last five years. I have been building my company the non-traditional way and not relying on Physicians. I have been using my blog and my website; physicaltherapist. pros and and Check them out. We have been talking about this stuff for six or seven years. Just because everyone else doesn’t do it like that, I have been on my own. I know that people needed this and finally I got out of my own way and said I am just going to do it. The truth is, I have no one to flock with. No one is doing it like this in Physical Therapy or building it like this in Physical Therapy. I am on my own. I had to get the focus, determination and drive to say even though no one is doing it like me and most Physical Therapists are struggling, I have to have the courage to do this.

I have a lot of people happy for me, but I am also going to encounter haters. I will encounter those people that flock and say they don’t do it like me, so therefore he must not be the real deal. The point is if you want to do something special; you are going to have to break away from the pack. I know there are people that may work somewhere or be somewhere where people will flock in and they are going nowhere fast. You have to break off.

In 2004, I was working for a corporation and I had to break off. This is where I am now. Those people that were flocking are still flocking together at the same job. At this point I am flocking where things are good. This is my point to you all, “Birds of a feather, flock together”. Don’t be a bird, be an eagle.

Are you driven by your belief OR are you driven by your lack thereof?

Are you driven by your belief in things or by your lack of belief? Are you driven by fears of things? You know I treat patients; I interact with a lot of people. We talk about a lot of things and I like to listen to people. This is what I have realized during this whole election season. More people are driven by their lack of belief in the opposition than they are in the belief of the person they are voting for. They are talking about Trump. I don’t see them voting for him, but its more about they hate the other side so much that they believe he is their only way out or vice-versa. I think this is a dangerous thing. I am not talking only from a political place.

If you believe your life is going to change because of one person in a political scene, you are probably living your life by design. I am not sure that is good. If you are driven by your unbelief in so many things; your fears, this is not a good thing. Prejudice is built off of fear. I believe that every single thing that we do comes off a belief. Whether that belief is of yourself or the times you don’t believe in yourself, you have a belief in the community you have around you. Whether by a friend; 2,3,5 or 10. If that doesn’t work, you have a belief in a higher power. I am a follower of Christ and you know that I am a true believer.

Even if you are not, you have to believe in something higher than yourself to pull from when things get tough. Understand this, if your belief is driven off of everything you don’t believe in and everything you don’t stand for it is going to be really hard to get ahead. Find things you believe in and go for it! Be around things you believe in and don’t surround yourself with things you don’t.

Being Vulnerable

I am going to share what is going on in my life right now. Good stuff, but stressful. Yesterday I was on Periscope; I did morning routine. I felt good. Right now my company is breaking all kinds of records. In one office we are seeing 200-225 people a week. The other office close to 150. I am currently in the process of developing four new courses for Physical Therapy, new grad Physical Therapists and private practice Physical Therapists. I am speaking at four events in the next two months, San Francisco, Seattle, Orlando and Atlanta. My wife and I are celebrating our 15 year Anniversary next week. We are going to the Bahamas and I am just overwhelmed. I have a lot of things going on. I have three full time people in my office and I just had to hire three virtual assistances, just for my projects, full time, two part-time. To say that I am not overwhelmed is a lie. To say I am overwhelmed is an understatement.

I was doing my work out and I couldn’t get through it. I was struggling. The whole workout was hard and half way through the work out, I nearly started crying. I felt like I couldn’t do it. My body was starting to give out. I had to pause the work out and continue to catch my breath. I was struggling. I wanted to cry. I was so tired; I couldn’t even cry. The bad thing was that I had a twelve-hour day with seven new patients and 68 people on the schedule. It was an overwhelming day. It was just too much. I have to be honest, during that time at that 21minute mark and I just felt I couldn’t do it anymore.

Do you know what got me through that workout? Do you think it was the flex selfies or the good times that got me through that workout?                                                                                                                        Let me tell you what got me through that workout. I remembered that there was a time when I did the Chicago marathon back in 2008 and I was at the 16th mile of the 26.2 mile and my body just failed out. I remember saying I just can’t do this. My body was cramping; I was seizing up. It was a hot race and I thought I was going to die. I remember taking step over step. I don’t even know how I did it, but I managed to limp across that finish line. That is what got me through yesterday’s workout.

I remember one time I was in another race and things were not going too well. I had to find it in me to  get across the finish line. When you are going through tough times, it is not the good times that get you through, it is the bad times.

I decided I wanted to share this with you all because right now I am extremely busy and stressed out. I realize that something good is about to happen. The good times is not what is getting me through these tough times. It is the belief that I have done these tough times before and I can get through them again. I don’t know where you are right now, but if you are going through tough times, you have to understand that those bad times are going to set you up for the future because you are going to get through it. But remember years from now if you have struggles you are going to pull from these bad times and remember that you got through them. In 2016, I can do this. I can get through these tough times. I can do this because I know what is going to happen in two or three months. If you are currently struggling, pull from the previous times. You can do it. My viewers are resilient. I am too. Pull strength from previous times, if you are going through some rough times right now. This is going to give you the strength you need to get through it later on.

All work no play? No way!

In the early days of Renewal Rehab, I really didn’t have any other option but to miss out on some of the fun things in life to build the business.

Once we started to build Renewal Rehab beyond my biz partner and I, I had a great group of people that were very capable of running it without me there… but I really had a difficult time taking my hands off of every part of the business.

I felt guilty taking a day off… Even though I knew the place could run just fine without me having my hands on every part of the company.

Major health scares in my life forced me to re-analyze everything. And realize that every day is not promised to you… And made me not want to live with regrets anymore.

all work no play

So honestly, I’m enjoying life a lot more now.
That’s the way it supposed to be as an entrepreneur… You sacrifice, and you work really hard to put yourself in a position to where you can dictate everything on your terms.

So I was looking at a few pictures in my phone last week… And I saw a few things that really typify my week.

I only work at my office two days a week.
I don’t have 1 ounce of guilt about it… When you are an entrepreneur, especially in healthcare… You actually are rewarded for becoming better at your craft.
I would be very happy if I saw 10 new consults for my office every single week.
Now, I see anywhere between 15 to 20 new consults every week working only two days.

I have an amazing staff that I trust to execute out the treatments that I have designed for every patient.

On my other days, I set out to work based off of finishing my tasks. I usually have 15 to 20 tasks that I need to complete on my off days, in order for the business to run efficiently and fluently.
I don’t put any requisite of hours worked on those tasks…
When I finish the tasks my day is done.

So now, I’ve made it a habit for my wife and I to have time for each other. And if we decide that we want to do midday date… I wake up at 5 AM in the morning, get all my tasks done, so that I can finish my day by 10 AM or 11 AM.

And that my friends… Is the life of an entrepreneur.
This Tuesday and Thursday, my work day was done at 11 AM.
Friday… Pretty much the same.
On Saturday, I worked for about four hours while I was watching college football.

On Sunday, I was preparing for what I want to talk about on social media and through my blogging. Probably around three hours of work.
But that sets me up for having a week that I can spend with my wife and my family… And I was not able to do any of those things before.

I say this not for anyone to envy the life of an entrepreneur… But I say this to make you just think…
Is time important to you? Do you struggle with the fact that the 40 hour work week doesn’t work with the type of lifestyle that you want to live?

Well then… You really need to think about being an entrepreneur. But please don’t be fooled into thinking that you’re going to have a cakewalk as soon as you “fire” your boss… It’s lots of hard work, lots of lost sleep… And even after you think you have “made it” you have to still have a pulse on your business… Or you have the potential to lose it all.

Are You Ready?

Here is what I have finally come to understand about Entrepreneurship, fitness, and taking risks. What I learned about moving forward with ideas. You are never ready. I have been up since 6:00 have been wasting time. I have been doing payroll that I didn’t have to do right now. I have been doing everything but my usual routine. That is, get up, read my devotional, listen to some type of motivational talk and then complete my work out. That is what I do. I have just been BS’ing for an hour and a half. It is 8:30 and I am just finishing my workout. I didn’t have it in me. It wasn’t that I was exhausted, I just felt weak. My pre-workout had run out and I thought I can’t do this today. My work out has pretty heavy lifting. After stalling for over an hour, I decided to do the workout. I told myself I was going to reduce my weight by 10 pounds today. I already told myself this. It is amazing how powerful your mind can be. You tell yourself this, then you get through the warm up and you say screw it, I am going to up my work out today. Guess what? I did it! I increased my reps. I increased my weight. Then I increased on the second exercise. There are 9 exercises and 4 of the 9 I hit a personal best today.

Truth is, you are never ready. You are never ready to do something that is a bit more uncomfortable than you are used to. You are never ready to go out on business. You are never ready to do things that are deep down in your heart. You know you should take this leap, but you are not ready yet.

Here is another story. There is a Physiatrist I know, a pain management doctor, that is a good friend of mine. His private practice is open right next door to me for about 2 years. Twelve years ago, he and I talked about opening a big facility together. This is when we had dreams of opening up clinics. He is a true believer in Physical Therapy. He came to my office yesterday looking for a can opener. I told him he has a really nice exotic car. Then I asked him if he was happy he had opened up his private practice? He said, you know Greg, the reason why I did it was because I had no choice.  He had gotten laid off from his prior employer and they had given him no choice. They offered him his office if he wanted it, but they were leaving and they no longer needed his services. He had a pregnant wife, they had massive bills. He said, guess what, I wasn’t ready. I only did it because I had no choice.

This is the message today; you are never going to be ready. You are never going to be ready to do that work out, you are never going to be ready to take that risk. You will never be ready to go to school. You will never be ready to get into that relationship, get married or have kids. You will never be ready. So if you are waiting for that, I will tell you right now, you will take that to your grave because you will never be ready. You just have to jump. The human spirit is so powerful; we are so resilient. When we are put into situations, we find a way. I would love to come on here and tell you I had it all figured out. But I didn’t. I knew I was never going to be ready, but I had to take a jump.

That is my message, just jump! Realize you are a lot more powerful than you think you are.

Be the Bigger Person

I always tell my employees, my wife, my friends that you need to be the bigger person. This morning I was reading a devotional. This devotional was about arguments. How do you resolve conflict?

My reasoning for doing these blogs consistently is to make you better. Sometimes it could be physically, sometimes it could be emotionally. Sometimes it could be with relationships. It is to help you become better. One of the things about conflict when you are dealing with people is that you are always wrong. The other person can be wrong too. You could be 99.99 percent right in this conflict and .01 percent wrong. But someone has to be the bigger person.

resolve conflict

Resolve Conflict by Learning to say “Sorry”

I would say one of the biggest attributes to success in my Physical Therapy company over the last 11 years is that if we have a conflict with a patient or if they are not happy about their scheduled time or maybe they are not happy about something, I say “I am sorry”. This happened two weeks ago at my office. I don’t know what happened at our front desk, but something happened with a patient and the first thing I did when I saw the patient was to say “I am sorry”. I didn’t even do anything!!! But I had to say I am sorry because you have to understand that when it comes to resolving conflict, someone has to say they are “Sorry, I apologize for my part in this”. At the end of the day, what I realize is if I am going to ask people to work out and invest in themselves… if I am going ask people to do those things, we have to be right emotionally and mentally.

If there are relationships in our life that are just holding us back, it makes us not want to move forward with other parts of our life. That is really the truth, and if you have a relationship today that is unresolved and there is conflict there, be the bigger person and apologize. Even if it really isn’t your fault, just apologize. I am telling you right now, one of the best books I ever read, is a book by Dale Carnegie called How to Win Friends and Influence People. At the end of the day, that is more important than getting muscles.

You have to learn how to get along with people. It will to take you so far in life. We need to learn how to deal with people better. If I had to take one attribute that I have that has allowed me to get to the places that I am in life, it is learning how to deal with people and even more importantly, how to deal with complicated people. So that is my message for today. No exercise, no fitness motivational talk. Just deal with people. Say ‘I am SORRY”, even if it is not your fault.

Perks of Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship. I love being an entrepreneur… Entrepreneurship can change your life! Why?

Because I do have more control of my time. But please… Don’t let anybody fool you into thinking that if you’re your own boss… You don’t have to work hard.

That sounds like an entrepreneur that won’t be in business for very long.

Yesterday, I saw over 20 patients, and nine new consults. I didn’t leave my office until close to 9 pm as I was finishing up documentation.

Tomorrow, my team and I have 32 patients on our schedule, with 9 new consults that I will have to see…
This morning, even though I didn’t have to work at the clinic today… I still woke up at 5 AM, so that I can get my workout in, and get all my work done before noon… So that Kerry and I can get in a lunch date before the kids come home from school.

Entrepreneurship is a key driver of our economy.

Personally, I love being able to do mid-day lunch dates like this in the week…but that’s just what floats my boat…and that’s the perks of being an entrepreneur. But, you still have to put in the work.

I love that I can offer fitness/wellness programs in my clinics without having to answer to some idiot corporate guy that just wants to pound out as many physical therapy patients as possible and not help people beyond that.

So that’s the perks of being your own boss…. but if you are a boss that doesn’t challenge yourself, gives yourself off more days, than days that you are working probably won’t be around for very long.
